According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, the cuts could affect up to 1,800 flights or over 268,000 passengers daily.
Airlines are accustomed to canceling thousands of flights during severe weather, but these cuts during the shutdown are expected to last indefinitely until safety data improves.
FAA administrator Bryan Bedford acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the situation, stating, "We're in new territory in terms of government shutdowns."
